Please take extra care when driving in snow and ice
Driving in the current weather conditions can be dangerous if road users do not drive according to the prevailing weather conditions.
Even in areas such as Liverpool which typically have a mild climate, the current snow and ice has caused havoc. Last night (5 Jan 09) a journey which would normally take 30 minutes took 6 hours with the car being adandoned and the journey completed by rail. If you do not feel confident driving in the bad weather, do not risk it. If you feel you need to make a journey and that you are competent enough to drive in the conditions follow the basic rules below:
Be prepared
Make sure you take de-icer, a spade, warm clothing or blankets, jump leads and a first aid kit.
Before driving
Clear all snow and ice off your car - this includes ALL windows, the bonnet, roof, lights, mirrors and registration plate.
When driving
Drive with care and keep well back from the car in front.
Be prepared for sudden changes in the road conditions.
Listen to local radio stations for traffic and weather updates.
Drive at a low speed using as high a gear as possible.
Brake and accelerate VERY gently.
Take bends slowly and avoid sudden movements of the steering wheel.
REMEMBER - IT'S BETTER TO ARRIVE LATE BUT SAFE!
